As we can see today the environmental crisis has overwhelmed the global political agenda. Political leaders question the problems about the Earth’s health and environmental degradation as a threat to our survival.
Activists and scientists have been saying this for a long time and demand radical political actions. We have global warming, CO2 emissions, water pollution, consumer lifestyle, over-consumption etc. All these issues are a matter of technological solutions and optimization. If we convert to renewable energy we can reduce the carbon in the atmosphere, if we build energy-efficient houses and buildings we can reduce the need of energy consumption. These challenges guide us to seek new technological fixes, changes in lifestyle and acceptance of responsibility. It means that we should consider the concept of ecological footprint. The carrying capacity of the ecosystem is threaten by our over-consumption.
The Ecovillage Movement
This movement is very important for our human development as a species. All the above environmental problems are reduced and shows that we can change our lifestyle. Exploding oil prices force us to change the way of food production. This means we should start using our native skills to grow our own food and become self-sufficient on daily basis. Producing food organically by traditional methods using the ways of permaculture is especially nurtured in these villages. Development of local communities, building social networks, natural environment, reducing the number of people in urban cities by process of localization in rural ambiance. Shifting the economic activity from the big corporations into the hands of small communities reliable on them selves.
Transportation by airplane, car or train will be luxury in near future as we have the oil price increasing on a daily basis. Thanks to the number of successful ecovillages in the world today we have the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN – gen.ecovillage.org) that promotes the values of creativity in sustainable and communal living. The shift of energy production from the state to the local community using solar, geothermal, wind, hydro and biomass resources will help people to become resilient on energy crisis and embrace sustainability.
Values and Reculturization
The ecovillage movement is a global phenomenon responding to the voice of mother Earth and the problems facing her. Helps in the anti-globalization and anti-neo-liberalism movement around the world. Quietly building small, sustainable communities with their limited resources, with personal commitment for collective values and improved lifestyle. Ecovillagers are the true force of our time, they take the way of life seriously and take personal action to deal with the world’s problems. The politicians are unable to deal with these issues hence they do not know how to do that. The significance of this movement is the personal change of one’s own life toward good and sustainable living.
The future will be built on the hands of these ecovillages and we should start building or restarting deserted villages into sustainable and happy communities taking care for nature and the planet. The powerful force behind this movement will push the society in reculturization of the values and implement permaculture and energy production on a global scale. The old way is becoming more and more expensive so we need to change that. We have to be more adaptable according to the new challenges we have, and face with reality for better humanity and happy planet.
