The Global Village Construction Set

We already know about the GNU project and use today GPL (General Public License) software products like Debian OS, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gimp, GNOME etc. Thanks to this movement started by Richald Stalman we have the freedom today to use the Internet and free software in our daily lives.

Open Source Ecology takes the principles that were developed originally by FOSS and open-source software movement and applies these principles to open source hardware. Originally the project was started by Marcin Jakubowski with noble idea to develop environmental friendly society by building open source tools. The value of this sharing is to get to the point where people will share ideas and blueprints, models and machines on a global collaboration scale capable of building sustainable communities. The future of this project is to create an open society where everybody’s needs are met, everyone has access to information and human creativity will be unleashed for all people.

Marcin published his 3D concepts and designs, blueprints, how-to videos for Global Village Construction Set (GVCS) and today the project is run by contributors from all over the world. We can find more than 50 machines in 3D models and blueprints and almost ten build and used for real production. All documentation are licensed under GNU Free Documentation License (equivalent to GPL) and all these looks like the way GNU project was started in the early beginnings.

Our goal is a repository of published designs so clear so complete that a single burned DVD is effectively a civilisation starter kit – Marcin Jakubowski

The farm is set in Missouri open for visitors and by the use of Kickstarter fundraising campaign the project is successfully funded. Each machine relies on other machine in order for it to exist. The machines will help us build: Open Source – Low-Cost – Modular – User-Serviceable – DIY – Closed-Loop Manufacturing – High Performance – Heirloom Design – Flexible Fabrication.

OSE is a global movement and collaboratory. Our goal and current engagement is building the world’s first replicable, open source, post-industrial village. The name refers to an ecology, or ecosystem, of open-source hardware that works as an ecological whole. However, the name implies much more than technology – for technology is merely a basis upon which social organization can happen, in harmony with its natural life support systems. The real issue then emerges – the possibility of unprecedented quality of life for all. – Open Source Ecology (OSE) International
